Got Ants? We do! The GSTC staff will be teaming up with the University of Georgia, Sea Island Company and other islands throughout Georgia to continue Jeannie’s ongoing research to determine the effect that fire ants have on loggerhead sea turtle nests and their hatchlings. We will be monitoring the nests, sampling the beach, collecting data at excavations, and performing necropsies and pathology on hatchlings found depredated by fire ants.
To learn more about this program and volunteer involvement there will be an interest and orientation meeting on Saturday, May 10th at 7:00pm. All current volunteers are welcome to attend. The intent of this meeting will be to provide the history of the project as well as the goals and protocols for this season.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of this project every volunteer will not be able to participate. Volunteers that are able to participate will be required to attend an additional training on the beach. The beach training will be during the third week of May, exact date will be determined at the interest/orientation meeting.
If you have any questions feel free to contact Sarah Mathias at 912-635-4076 or Jeannie Miller at 912-635-4070.
